Ever spring the Jack Crevalle come back to the beaches off Floridas panhandle. If conditions are favorable for a skiff to get out the passes, anglers can cruise the crystal clear waters to target these medium size jacks ranging from 10 to 15 pounds. 8 and 9wts are the go to fly rods for these little tanks depending on the environmental conditions and size of fly. We like to throw topwater chuggers for these guys as they key in on the surface commotion making it a spectacle for a topwater eat.
Once summer rolls around the Jacks get into the bay systems and call it home for the months of July-September. These are not the 10lbrs that were on the beach, these are the true 20-30lbrs that require a 10-11 wt depending on conditions and how big of a fly you're able to throw. Ensure you have net capable of handling these giant fish so that you don't feed the sharks as they have grown keen on the free meal over the years. Water will be hot so resect the fishery and try and keep these giants in the water with water flowing over their gills so they don't fall victim to sharks.
Fall is when the Jack fishing really heats up with every fish being above the 20lb range and crashing the giant schools of mullet as they try to school up and move to their winter haunts. Expect to find massive schools all across the bays blowing up giant schools of bait.
